WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) issued the following statement on marriage equality in response to the President’s announcement yesterday.  An audio recording of Senator Harkin’s comments on the topic from his weekly Iowa media call can be found here.

“At the heart of this issue is expanding equality under the Constitution for all Americans.  Iowa was at the forefront of this issue, just as our state has been on so many civil rights issues, and I am proud of the Iowa Supreme Court for taking a stand more than three years ago.  In fact, Justice Cady’s opinion was one of the finest judicial opinions I have ever read.

“President Obama’s thinking has evolved on this issue over time, just as my own thinking has evolved.  He did the right thing – the courageous thing – and I commend him.  His announcement is just another step in the march towards greater equality for all Americans.”

  1. Sen. Harkin, everybody knows he’ll say any thing to get votes. Or are you as stupid as you think we voters are?!

  2. It’s pretty courageous of obmama all right. How hard is it to pander for votes just to keep his job? God knows he surely cannot run on his record alone.

  3. Next thing you know, a bunch of bikers might see if they can’t get you removed from Clear Lake too.

  4. Really? You are the Pot calling the Kettle black. Work with the goverment? You really are a funny guy.

  5. Maybe you and Obama can get together and go boom boom some time Tom. Do everyone a favor and get lost.

    1. Agreed 100%. But it will never happen, because they would have to essentially, vote themselves out of office. Which, we all know they will never do. However, they don’t have a problem voting themselves raises every year on our backs.
