CHARLES CITY – Floyd county has announced a plan to pursue a K-9 program for the sheriff’s department.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office has recognized a need for the agency to better serve the citizens and visitors of Floyd County, they said this week.
“After much research, over the last year, the Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce that it has decided to pursue a K9 program. The K9 program will assist Deputies with article and evidence searches, building searches, tracking (both fugitive as well as lost persons), fugitive apprehension, search warrants and narcotics detection. We believe this to be an essential tool for the Avenue of the Saints corridor along with our rural roads and communities. The K9 team will also participate in educational programs for civic groups, schools, businesses, and organizations.”
The Sheriff’s Office has not had a K9 program in almost 25 years and there has not been a K9 in the county for 3 years.
Deputy Luke Chatfield has been selected as the K9 handler for the Sheriff’s Office. It is anticipated Deputy Chatfield will attend K9 training yet this year or early 2023.
Because the current Sheriff’s Office budget will not support the initial start-up costs of this type of program, the Sheriff’s Office has decided to kick off a fundraising effort to raise the nearly $30,000 needed this project. This amount will cover the cost of the K9, essential equipment, training/certification for the K9 team and vehicle upfit.
All money’s gathered will be placed into a K9 account, any excess money will be used to support the on-going cost and care of the K9 program. Any individual, group, organization, or business interested in donating to this project is asked to send a tax-deductible donation to the:
