December 19, 1953 – February 13, 2026

Laura J. Walton, 72, of Joice and recently of Good Shepherd in Mason City, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A Celebration of Laura’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa, with Rev. Becky Sogge officiating. She will be laid to rest at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the time of service at the church.

Laura Jean Farrell was born December 19, 1953, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Eugene and Carol Elizabeth (Howell) Farrell. She grew up alongside her three sisters, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Barbara, and graduated from Cedar Falls High School. In 1977, Laura married Micheal L. Walton. Together they raised six children: Mason, Nicole, Ben, Heather, Brent, and Shane. Laura worked for more than 20 years at Fleetguard/Cummins.

Laura found joy in the simple, everyday things. She loved exercising while watching her recorded shows—always fast-forwarding to “the good parts.” She enjoyed reading and later listening to audiobooks, a love she happily passed on to her grandchildren. Laundry was her favorite chore, and she somehow made even that feel comforting. Laura was silly, loved to sing and dance, and had a special fondness for banana Laffy Taffy.

Travel was another joy in her life. With her father’s career at the Illinois Central Railroad, Laura and her older sister took many memorable train trips. Over the years, she continued to look forward to traveling with friends and family, always appreciating time together more than the destination.

Laura was famously known as “everyone’s favori te mom.” She welcomed friends and strangers alike with a warm “Hi, honey,” or “Good afternoon, sweetheart.” She loved easily and fully. It was as a grandma that her heart truly shined. She was hands-on in every sense—down on the floor playing, listening intently, cheering loudly, and following each grandchild’s activities and achievements with pride. Nothing brought her more joy than having her grandchildren nearby, and she adored every visit, big or small. Her love was steady, joyful, and always present, making each grandchild feel deeply known and treasured. Her family was her world, and she loved each one of them with all her heart.

Proud of her Irish heritage, Laura was able to travel to Ireland with her sister and family. In true Irish fashion, she asked for a proper Irish wake—filled with tears and laughter—a true celebration of life and a happy goodbye.

Laura is survived by her children: Heather (Kevin) Kiewiet, Shane (Tammy) Walton, Mason (Sarah) Walton, Nicole (Andrew) Husske, and Ben Walton and his significant other, Heather Bell; her grandchildren: Amanda, Alexis, Brielle, Brooklyn, Alivia, Brock, Blake, Stephanie, Andrew, Tyler, Sidney, Brett, and Olivia; two great-grandchildren; her sisters: Rebecca (Michael) Burns, Elizabeth (Steven) Baumeister, and Barbara (Duayne) Shepard; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Micheal Walton; a son, Brent; and a grandson, Ian.
