YouTube officials confirm 20 billion videos in 20 years of company’s history

On April 23, 2025, YouTube marked a monumental milestone: 20 billion videos uploaded over two decades. From its humble beginnings with a 19-second clip titled “Me at the Zoo,” the platform has transformed into a global powerhouse, reshaping how we consume and create content.

From a Simple Idea to a Global Phenomenon

Founded in 2005 by former PayPal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, YouTube’s inception was reportedly inspired during a dinner party. The domain YouTube.com launched on Valentine’s Day that year, and just two months later, Karim uploaded the first-ever video, setting the stage for a new era of digital media.

Today, YouTube sees an average of 20 million videos uploaded daily, encompassing a vast array of content—from music and tutorials to documentaries and short films. With over 2.5 billion monthly users, it stands as the world’s largest digital video service in terms of viewer time and ad revenue.
