Opinion: Mercy’s new behavioral treatment center a positive for Mason City

Construction has supposedly begun on a new behavioral treatment center which will be part of the Mercy Hospital’s treatment offerings. This construction project will generate wages for those engaged in the construction process. After which, this facility will be staffed with various levels of skilled labor from doctors to the janitors who will maintain the property an a payroll will be generated.

None of this was generated by the North Iowa Area Corridor staff or personnel; it had nothing to do with the Chamber of Commerce and least of all that had nothing to do with the Bookmeyer administration. This is a facility that will generate a weekly cash payout that will be used within the community. This facility will not have the stench of pig manure, no streams will be polluted from CAFO run-off – we’ll sleep like babies at night.

And while it may not employ thousands of employees, it will not be at risk of closing down. The best part of it is the fact that unlike other current projects on the table in this community… this one isn’t a scam.

Why does editor Marquardt condemn people with ADD on this site? Either he is an advocate for mental health care or a stooge. See his comments regarding yard signs when someone asked about his campaign financing. This language from a City Council candidate?

Ouch…. I hope Matt can defend that comment during his yet to be announced public forum. Sounds very unprofessional to me.

No one important cares.

You did. You responded Mr. Chapped Lips. Those lips were made for kissing ass.

The only problem I see with this is it isn’t big enough to hold all the people who need help. It is a lot of money for the additional few beds. Makes one wonder what it is really about.

People with mental health problems are one class of people where society can still make jokes, ridicule, and stigmatize them and it is accepted. They are not protected by hate speech or hate crimes. They are ostracized in their communities. We are fortunate to have a facility that will be able to provide better treatment locally.

Carly, that don’t happen in my world. I speak up!

Is there a treatment program for corrupt politicians? If there is there won’t be a shortage of clients in Mason City.

But if people with mental problems don’t act a certain way that is Mercy considers “normal” they have them arrested thanks to a new policy by Satan himself Dan Varnum. Do you realize how idiot it is that they tell people with mental problems to act normal or else! Yes they place is needed by NOT run my the evil people/corporate Mercy!!!

Pete, I love it when you hit people with the truth and all they can do is call people names. We have the most negative bunch of bafoons pushing the arena to nowhere.

You are spot on and so is Wake up Mason City. It is never going to pass.

Mason City can sure use a treatment center like this.

Well, after attending the informational meeting today about the proposed multi purpose/hotel/ice arena, you are correct. Scam doesn’t begin to describe what they are trying to pull off.

The out and out lying that was spewed was astounding. As a layman I know when someone is telling the truth.

For example, they put forward the notion that if we don’t vote for this crazy project, our property taxes will go up because the Southbridge Mall will deteriorate. Toll Bridge/South Bridge is only assessed at $1,500,363.00 and only paying $49,000.00 a year in taxes. A far cry from the $400,000 or more they were paying before they went bankrupt. It already isn’t paying their fair share of taxes. That mall is worth more than $1,500,363 that it currently assessed at. Somebody is messing with the numbers.

The pictures of the new 2400 seat multipurpose/ice arena is nothing more than a glorified barn. For $12,500,000 no less. Somebody is taking somebody to the cleaners, and the taxpayers are the ones taking it the shorts. It is downright shameful!

There was so much BS put out in that meeting that I left shaking my head. How can Bill Shickel and some of these so called elected leaders be so stupid?

If this thing would happen to pass at the ballot box this town will be saddled with $26,500,000 more General Obligation Bond debt.

NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU, THEIR NUMBERS TO PAY OFF THAT $26,500,000 OF DEBT WILL FALL ON THE TAXPAYERS SHOULDERS. THIS PROJECT WILL NEVER CASH FLOW!

This project is so wrong and the people promoting it should be run out of town on a rail. It is really that bad!!!

Fascinating perspective on the proposed Behavioral Health Treatment Center you Moron.

Sounds like you will,be the first client

please explain what you are talking about.

Sounds a wee bit judgemental of you Peter…… you who call others names and use derogatory prose to berate them! Your written word here speaks volumes.

Thank you;I hope I am correct in that you are trying to complement me but just don’t know how.

You call someone Moron. Can you read? Can you comprehend? You made yourself look like a moron by not realizing that the author used the word “scam” referring to the crazy project the city is promoting we all know IS a scam.

I stop by to read the comments. The anger in your comment is obvious. Like Peter Children alluded, you are definitely a prospective client.

It makes him sound like Lvs
