John Adam Flannegan, son of Hugh and Elizabeth “Liz” (Szack) Flannegan, was born February 28, 1958. He began his education at St. Ellen’s Grade School which then became Emmetsburg Catholic School, through 8th grade. John was the third generation to attend the Catholic School. After graduating from 8th grade John attended Emmetsburg Community School, graduating from Emmetsburg High School.
On January 26, 1980 John was united in marriage to Carol Funck. They were blessed with four children.
John was employed at the Flannegan Landfill near Graettinger until it was sold in January 2002. The Landfill location was the Flannegan Century family farm. The Flannegan Landfill was one of the last privately owned landfills in the State of Iowa. John was a heavy equipment operator and did various excavation jobs in the area after the landfill sold.
John loved riding his Harley motorcycle, going snowmobiling and hunting. He also enjoyed attending Con Expo Conventions with his dad, traveling to Chicago, Houston and Las Vegas.
John passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Mercy One North Iowa Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 67. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Liz Flannegan; a granddaughter, Kaleigh; and brothers, Steven and Robert.
He is survived by his children, Danielle (Flannegan) Davis of Curlew, Iowa, Adam Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Katie Flannegan of Laurens, Iowa, and Luke Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; their mother, Carol Funck of Laurens, Iowa; grandchildren, Mathya, Raelyn, Joshwa, Rose, Justus, Jackson, Taralyn, Aiden and Matthew his sister, Lisa Kobernusz of Boone, Iowa; his brother, Michael Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
