News headline from the Iowa Dept. of Education, dated Oct. 31., 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Donald Trump promised to delete the Department of Education during his campaign, and now that he is ready to follow through on what the voters elected him for, Iowa Democrats are melting down.

The mission of the Department of Education, it clames, “is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access for students of all ages.”

However, the far right in America detests big government, and Republicans point to the Department of Education as telling locals how to teach and what to teach kids. The standards set there are unnecessary, conservatives say. However, it does disperse millions of dollars to states to run their schools and educational programs.

In a recent example, in October of 2024, “Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education today announced it was awarded a multi-year competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Education totaling over $24 million to advance effective evidence-based literacy practices and interventions across the state.”

However, reports are rampant that President Trump is ready to delete the Department of Education. Will the federal government support local education, and how, would be a mystery until the Trump Administration explains it.

This potential consternation has Iowa Democrats on edge. They said today, “Trump is drafting an executive order to abolish the Department of Education, which would gut funding for public schools and hit rural and low-income schools the hardest.

“Republicans have spent years attacking Iowa’s public schools. Now, Trump is trying to finish the job.”

Democrats in Iowa annually complain that Governor Kim Reynolds and the Republican-dominated Legislature underfund public schools.  To top it off, millions of taxpayer dollars that once went to public schools are being funneled to private schools via vouchers.  The future of education in Iowa seems murky at the moment.

  1. DoE is a waste of money, dumbing down the children of America. End “no child left behind” and bring back the “retard room”
