ANAMOSA – Iowa prison officials say an inmate took his own life Monday morning.
Anthony Steven Spurgeon was pronounced dead due to apparent suicide at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 18 at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. Spurgeon was 31 years old at the time of his death.
Spurgeon had been serving a 15-year maximum term for the crime of Habitual Offender and other charges from Wapello County. His sentence began on August 27, 2018.
The department investigates all suspected suicides within its correctional facilities.
