Gerald Francis “Jerry” Marzen, 92, was called home to Heaven on Thursday August 15, 2024 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, August 23, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm Street, Rockwell, Iowa, with Rev. Josh Link as Celebrant. Visitation will be prior to the service from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM at the church. A Rosary Service will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Dougherty, Iowa with a luncheon to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Jerry was born on November 30, 1931, the son of Andrew and Louise (Schumacher) Marzen in Dougherty, Iowa. He graduated from Dougherty High School as the Class President. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years as an aviation structural mechanic hydraulic in squadron VF-152 in Moffett Field, California. He met Dolores Spiller in Dougherty, Iowa, they eventually married on March 22, 1954 in Indian Hill Winterhaven, California. Together the couple had six children. Jerry was a lifelong Dougherty area farmer.
He was a member of the Rockwell Telephone Board, as well as a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dougherty, Iowa. Jerry also was a part of the Dougherty American Legion. Farming was his passion, his work ethic was second to none. He would never turn down a nice piece of pie.
Jerry will be remembered for his hard work ethic that has been instilled into his children and grandchildren, his dedication to the catholic church which included faithfully saying the rosary daily, his witty humor and his love for sweets.
Those left to cherish Jerry’s memory are his six children, Dennis (Sally) Marzen, Veronica “Vicki” Labianca, Michael (Connie) Marzen, Anthony “Tony” (Char) Marzen, Michelle Deverell, and Scott (Tawnya) Marzen. He was loved by her 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren and one on the way.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Dolores; his parents, Andrew and Louise Marzen; his brothers, Bernard and Leo; and a grandson, Drew Marzen.
A Special Thanks to Kentucky Ridge for making his last two years filled with kindness and compassion and laughter for putting up with Jerry’s crazy jokes.
