Northern Iowa man behind bars facing attempted murder charge after police standoff

DECORAH – Police surrounded a home in this Northern Iowa town after a badly injured victim was able to alert police to an assault.

On April 27, 2024, at around 1:19 AM, the Decorah Police Department was notified of an assault that had occurred at a residence in Decorah that had resulted In significant injury to the victim. The victim was able to advise law enforcement that the suspect was still at the home, with access to firearms within the residence.

A perimeter was established and the city and county combined negotiation team along with an Iowa State Patrol negotiator made attempts to contact the subject inside the residence, through multiple means, to no avail. Subsequently, additional tactical methods were utilized to assist in establishing contact with the subject in the house. After some time, contact was established and the subject was placed under arrest without further Incident.

Arrested on the scene was 27-year-old Daniel John Hammel (pictured at top) of Decorah. He was charged with attempted murder, a class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

This case remains under investigation.

The Decorah Police Department was assisted on the scene by the Winneshiek County Sheriffs Office, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Winneshiek County 911 Center, along with crisis negotiators.
