MASON CITY – Vermont Senator and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders held a campaign rally in Mason City on Saturday, January 4, 2019.
The rally was held in the Music Man Square in downtown Mason City; doors opened at 5 PM. Folk musicians soon began to perform as a crowd of 200-300 people filtered in. Local activist and farmer Chris Petersen spoke to the crowd, which filled the ballroom, on a number of subjects. National Co-Chair of the Sanders Campaign, Nina Turner, spoke with fervor on topics such as health care, women’s inequality, prison reform, and of course, Donald Trump; she mentioned what she called his “racist” tactics in dividing the nation and pitting one group against another.
Senator Sanders followed Turner. He spent a majority of his limited time (this was his third stop of the day, he said) on health care. He asked citizens in the crowd to talk about how much they pay for health care and to describe the impact of that cost on their lives. He allowed nearly a dozen folks to tell their stories; one young lady with cancer described how she lost her job and was turned away for her medical treatments because she could not pay a share of the cost that day, which amounted to $3,000. A nurse from Minnesota spoke about children being held in camps at the Southern border and the alleged treatment they receive there. Calling it “Medicare for All“, Sanders spoke of various taxes on wealthier Americans and businesses to cover the cost of a universal health care plan for America.
Sanders also touched on prison reform (eliminate private prisons), marijuana legalization (clear offenders’ records), income inequality (women make less), and student debt elimination (tax Wall Street speculation). Sanders didn’t speak of foreign policy until a young man asked him about the escalating tension with Iran. Sanders then became very passionate about his anti-war record. He spoke of the lies that started the second Iraq War (no WMD’s, despite claims there were) and how the same cycle is beginning now with Iran. He said the toll of a war with Iran would be catastrophic, and the variables are “unknown” and unpredictable. He said war should always be a final option.
Hurray for free stuff. Remember, anything government funded, means it is 100% TAXPAYER FUNDED!!!

In other words, most of the Democrat front runners of the last 3 election cycles.

*Sanders is walking the path of “Do Nothing Carter.” Iran released the hostages after hundreds of days, the minute Reagan was sworn in. They knew he wouldn’t mess around. Action is precisely what we needed. Iran rattles the cage, but in the end they will lose. Sadly, everyone in war does, but we will prevail in this nonsense.
