Charlotte M. (Friedman) Comer,102, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. She enjoyed a long and successful career as an English teacher, spending happy years at Ottumwa Heights Academy, Clear Lake High School, John Adams Junior High and Mason City High School.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. on Saturday May 4, 2024 at Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street SE, Mason City, IA 50401. Visitation and public viewing will be held from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Burial will take place at Elmwood – St Joseph Cemetery following the service.

Charlotte M. Comer was born on September 20, 1921 in Halbur, Iowa. She was a graduate of St. Angela Academy in Carroll, Iowa, received a B.A. from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa and a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

She enjoyed a long and successful career as an English teacher, spending happy years at Ottumwa Heights Academy, Clear Lake High School, John Adams Junior High and Mason City High School. Charlotte taught for 35 years and retired in 1986.

She married the love of her life, Austin Comer, on August 6, 1960. They spent many nights dancing at the Surf Ballroom. They also traveled together throughout the United States and other countries.

Charlotte was particularly close to her sister Mary, her husband Jim Smith and their three children, Ann Marie, Kevin and Michele. They considered her to be a second Mom and will always remember her sense of humor and contagious laugh.

Charlotte was an avid bridge player and actively participated in the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church (Epiphany Parish).

She spent her last years at Good Shepard Health Center, always grateful for the kindness of the caregivers.

Those left to cherish Charlotte’s memory are her sister Mary Smith ; brother Joseph Friedman and many nieces and nephews.

Charlotte M. Comer was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Comer, and five brothers and sisters.

I had Miss Friedman as my 3 rd grade teacher at Lincoln School in Clear Lake . 1957 1958 . Always remember her! Bev Currier
