Mason City man dead after wrong-way, head-on collision with semi

CLEAR LAKE - A fatal accident Saturday night on Interstate 35 at Clear Lake took the life of a Mason City man.

CLEAR LAKE – A fatal accident Saturday night on Interstate 35 at Clear Lake took the life of a Mason City man.

On April 27, 2024, at 11:19 PM, the Clear Lake Police Department communication center received numerous 911 calls about a passenger car traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I‐35 in Clear Lake around mile marker 193. A short time later, additional callers reported that a vehicle had struck a semi‐tractor trailer head‐on, on I‐35, in the south bound lanes.

Clear Lake Officers arrived on scene at 1123 PM, within four minutes of the first 911 call. They were able determine the passenger car reported to be traveling the wrong way on the interstate had struck a semi. The driver of the passenger car, Glen Hemming, 56, of Mason City, Iowa, was deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the semi, Hussein Haidar, 40, of Burnsville, Minnesota, was uninjured. However, his semi received disabling damage.

Due to the nature of the crash, the Clear Lake Police Department requested the assistance of the Iowa State Patrol.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 were closed for nearly four hours.

The Clear Lake Police Department was assisted by the Clear Lake Fire Department and Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
