OBIT: Arlene Dorothy (Kielsmeier) Carney, 92, of Charles City

Arlene Dorothy (Kielsmeier) Carney, 92, of Charles City, IA, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mason City, IA. She donated her body to the Medical School at the University of Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Marble Rock United Methodist Church with Pastor Dennis Burns officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the church and a light lunch will follow the service.

The daughter of Orvel and Mildred (Daake) Kielsmeier, Arlene was born at home in rural Rockford on January 14, 1926. She attended country school through eighth grade and graduated as class valedictorian from Rockford High School in 1943. With a War Emergency Certificate, she began teaching in the Ulster and Niles Townships rural schools while attending classes at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. She graduated with a two-year elementary certificate. After five years she was named the Administrative Assistant to the County Superintendent of Schools. After 1951, she was a substitute schoolteacher at Marble Rock Elementary and Junior High School. For many years, Arlene visited area classrooms where she talked to the students about education and life in one-room country schoolhouses. Throughout her life, Arlene was the consummate teacher.

Arlene married Robert A. Carney on January 28, 1951, at Flood Creek Methodist Church in rural Rockford during a monumental blizzard.

Following a wedding trip to California, they lived near Greene and eventually moved to the Carney family farmhouse built in 1893 southeast of Marble Rock.

Arlene was actively involved in the Marble Rock United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for over 45 years. Arlene served as an officer for the United Methodist Women at the local, district, and state levels. In addition, she served on a variety of administrative and leadership councils, and was the first woman to be named Chairperson of the Administrative Council. Certified as a Lay Speaker in 1986, Arlene conducted numerous worship services in the Mason City and area districts for the next twenty-five years.

Arlene was a member of the Marble Rock Federated Study Club for 60 years. She was a founding member of the Marble Rock Historical Society, served on its Board of Directors, and was its curator for 40 years; she was President of the Society for a number of years. Arlene served on many additional community groups: Marble Rock ABC (A Better Community), Floyd County Sesquicentennial County Commission, Floyd County Mental Health Board, Salsbury Baptist Home Family Council, Cedar Valley Engine Club and the Iowa Mother’s Association.

Arlene enjoyed baking cookies for her grandsons (and visiting with them as they raided the cookie jar), teaching, gardening, conducting worship services, and her travels throughout the United States, Israel, England, Scotland, and Germany. She enjoyed volunteering at the Cedar Valley Engine Club’s annual Labor Day Weekend event where she gave tours of the school building she attended and in which she taught; telling stories of what it was like to be a student and then a teacher in a one-room country school.

Arlene is survived by four children: Dennis (Diane) Carney of Mason City, Iowa; Diane (Clayton) Black of Marble Rock, Iowa; Donna Carney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Dawn Hahn of New Glarus, Wisconsin. She is also survived by five grandsons: Andrew Carney (fiancé Sarah Slaton) of Breckenridge, Colorado; Stephen Carney (fiancé Amanda Slater) of Missoula, Montana; Miles (Trista) Black of Des Moines, Iowa; Jeremy Hahn of New Glarus, Wisconsin; and Alex Hahn of New Glarus, Wisconsin. She is survived by her sisters Thelma Kock of Greene, Iowa; Betty (Max) Wedeking of Marble Rock, Iowa; and Lucille (Eugene) Meier of Rockford, Iowa. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, former students, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2015, her parents, brother-in-law Sylvan Kock, and sister-in-law and her husband, Jean and Robert Duregger.

Memorials may be directed to the Marble Rock United Methodist Church, the Marble Rock Historical Society and/or the Cedar Valley Engine Club.
