Wrong-way driver on interstate highway in Cedar Rapids claims two lives in crash

CEDAR RAPIDS – Two people are dead after a man got on an interstate highway in Cedar Rapids and traveled the wrong way.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department received multiple calls about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 380 around 33rd Avenue SW at 9:10 p.m. Monday evening.

Officers responded to attempt to locate the vehicle and found a multiple vehicle accident that had occurred in the northbound lanes of I-380 between 76th Avenue SW and Wright Brothers Boulevard SW.

The collision involved a 2007 Toyota Prius that was reportedly driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-380. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Robert King Norton, Jr., age 69 of Iowa City. Norton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based upon the accident investigation at this time, Norton’s vehicle collided with a 2008 Volvo S40 that was driven by Jennifer Rae Koenighain, age 28 of Cedar Rapids. Koenighain was also pronounced dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, was also involved in the collision. The two occupants of that vehicle were travelling northbound on I-380 and sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The accident remains under investigation.
