MASON CITY – Jail is supposed to be tough – but how tough?
An NIT reader with connections to the Cerro Gordo county jail informed that some inmates are not happy with their treatment there, and complaints are being filed. The source claims that the food is substandard and there are not enough recreational opportunities offered to inmates.
“Cerro Gordo county jail is sending inmates to bed hungry,” our source claims. “Grievance reports are being submitted by inmates about lack of activities to fill their time.”
Sheriff Kevin Pals told NIT Thursday that “We do get grievances from time to time” but didn’t elaborate on the nature of the complaints.
Allegedly, inmates are complaining that “serving size being served don’t meet FDA recommendations for portions and many meals are without any meat.”
A typical meal might consist of “1/2 cup of mash potatoes, 1 cup peas, and slice of bread.”
“It isn’t enough to sustain the body of average male adult,” explained the source, who is talking to inmates at the jail. “Those who do calisthenic workouts (no area or equipment provided) for those who dont want to waste away (physically) need protein in meals and proper portions to support their bodies…I received complaint and … this problem increases physical and emotional distress in inmates.”
She claims this alleged beef between inmates and jail staff over food “is causing more disruptions for staff.”
Again, Sheriff Kevin Pals explained that “all inmate complaints are handled through jail grievance procedures. All our meals are approved by a dietitian and inspected by the State Jail Inspector to make sure we are following State code.”
As for the possible complaints about activities, Sheriff Pals said “We are required to offer recreation twice a week.”

Peter L best advice to come out of your mouth, The Sherrif Joe idea would also work. Our jail is just a motel for these cons. I’m just waiting for the felons asking the jailers to tuck them in and read them a nite time story. I’ve been there and it’s not a bad place to sleep, have sex and eat some grub.
Ive said it before. The real key to this equation are organic work farms adjacent to the jail. They can produce produce for themselves and the community. No TVs. Initiate boot camp PT.

Most of these ass hats use their free time, their recreational time, outside of jail to do things that get them put in jail. If they are in jail to serve a sentence for a crime they have committed, they don’t need recreation, they need to sit in an 8 ft by 8 ft concrete room and stare at the walls. No television, especially cable television, no radio, no community room time. You eat in your cell. Showers every other day. Sit there and take your punishment.
And in that billion dollar complex they couldn’t of put an outdoor yard In to give them fresh air etc… I think it’s a bunch of bull shit how they get treated and fed and I don’t want to hear they ard criminals either some of the people in there don’t deserve to eat for the things they have done to kids but seriously you need more than a 1/2 cup of potatoes
I never understood why we build super expensive incarceration facilities in America instead of defining a basic service level framework, and simply outsource the entire industry to lowest bidders in the third world. We’d save a boatload of money and we wouldn’t have to listen to wining like this.
How about treat them like humans. You would make sure your dog gets fed enough even if it pissed on the carpet! Until you have seen rock bottom, then you can’t speak on “what you would do”, and no other civilized countries don’t feed them mush idiot, they put their time in for rehabilitation… Soak that in for a second… Rehabilitation…. The United States has the worst recidivism rate in the world because why you ask? No rehabilitation. Sure they need punishment but they can handle being locked away by themselves, we need to fix the reason they messed up, not rub their nose in it and tell them they are bad boys… The United States is 5% of the world population with 70% of the total imprisoned people in the world… It’s just big business.. oh, and while im at it, sure we should treat them as humans. make them work their way like the rest of us, in a chain gang for example. and give them an appropriate amount of nutritionally correct food to maintain a normal, healthy body weight. nutritionally correct means as we all know little to no meat, and obviously no extra rations to maintain an obese or inflated gym body. just because your average white trash is eating itself to death on double portions of beef meat doesn’t mean convicts are entitled to engage in the same unhealthy behavior on the tax payers dime.
Obedience is to authority is subjective. Okay, so you designed something a certain way. What if others don’t agree with your design? You make them agree. Punish them. Show them there is an adverse consequence to their disobedience and non-compliance. Conditioning 101.

They should pay for their stay at the gray bar hotel. And if they dont have the money no problem. Make them do supervised public works projects and dont release them until their debt is paid in full. Simple, legal and effective.
