ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton and Lt. Governor Tina Smith released statements today regarding the death of Philander Castile, who was gunned down by a police officer during a traffic stop in the Twin Cities area and died Wednesday night.
Castile was reportedly a lawful gun carrier, and told the officer that, prior to the officer shooting him.
The following is a statement from Governor Mark Dayton:
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community of Philando Castile. Our state today grieves with them.
“This morning, I spoke by phone with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough to request that the U.S. Department of Justice begin an immediate independent federal investigation into this matter.
“Overnight, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension began an independent investigation at the state level. They are currently collecting all necessary evidence, and interviewing witnesses, to determine what happened, and to assure that justice in this case is served. I will do everything in my power to help protect the integrity of that investigation, to ensure a proper and just outcome for all involved.”
The following is a statement from Lt. Governor Tina Smith:
“I grieve for Philando Castile, his family, friends, and community, and especially the child, who was in the car with him. I pray for everyone touched by this tragedy, including our law enforcement officers.
“The Governor has wisely requested the U.S. Department of Justice conduct an independent investigation, and I am grateful the Falcon Heights Police Department immediately asked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to lead their independent investigation. As we seek justice, we must be ruled by facts and the law. We need a swift, impartial investigation, and peace.”
All that has come out as of now is the girlfriends account. Does anyone know did the officer have a body camera on? Nothing has come to light as of yet not to believe the officer feared for his own safety.

absolutely sickening. my prayers go to castile and his family. the cop who did this need to spend many years in prison. also my sympathies to the 90% good honest competent cops out there who would never do something like this and yet will be feathered and tarred over it.
They only showed the last part of the video. Fools like you fall for it. Why don’t you wait until all the facts are in before making a fool of yourself.
How do you know he had a license to carry? The officer says in the video he told him not to reach for it. Why was he stopped? A suspect in an armed robbery? She said the stop was for a taillight out, but it’s broad daylight. How about the videos she posted of her and him smoking dope in the car with the daughter? Please explain what you are basing your opinion of the situation on? Why was she so calm? Was this planned? They are already cashing in.
