MASON CITY – A Mason City rental house was damaged by smoke and fire, and a fire fighter was hospitalized as he performed his job.

According to Mason City fire investigator Aaron Beemer, at 12:58 pm on Friday, June 5th, the Mason City Fire Department responded to a house fire located 520 N Massachusetts Ave.  The fire was discovered by the tenants Kerrick Hyduke and Amanda Ackerley upon returning to the residence. No one was home when the fire started. The family had a dog and several small caged pets that were safely removed from the home.

Fire damage to the residence was confined to a bedroom on the main floor. However, the rest of the home was significantly damaged by smoke. The department was on scene for about one hour and 45 minutes.

On Monday, the cause of the fire was determined to be overheating of an electrical outlet which shorted out and ignited nearby combustibles.

One fire fighter, Mitch Smith, was treated at Mercy Hospital due to injuries.  He was released that same day, Chief Bob Platts told NIT Monday.

The residence is owned by Aaron Andrews of Mason City.

Yes, thank you. Try to imagine how hot it is wearing one of those fire suits. Most people couldn’t do it.

Prayers for the firefighter. And thank you to all firefighters who put there lives in the line for the members of the community.
