Tree huggers rejoice: Batteries can be dropped off at city hall to be recycled

BatteryMASON CITY – A new service is being offered to Mason City residents to recycle old and used household batteries. Residents are asked to bring used household batteries to the Clerk’s Office at City Hall located in the Main Lobby on the 1st Floor at City Hall in Mason City.

Household batteries being accepted at City Hall for recycling include:
*Non lithium AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V batteries
*Watch batteries
*Camera batteries
*Hearing aid batteries

There are types of batteries not being accepted at City Hall which residents will need to take to the Landfill of North Iowa. The types of batteries not accepted include:
*Car/vehicle batteries
*Power tool rechargeable batteries
*Any liquid filled batteries
*Any lithium batteries

Residents are asked to contact the Household Hazardous Waste Division at the Landfill of North Iowa at (877-LANDFIL) or (641) 357-5452 to make an appointment to drop off batteries that are not accepted for recycling at City Hall.

Mason City City Hall is located at 10 First Street NW and regular operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday with the exception of major holidays. The Landfill of North Iowa is located at 15942 Killdeer Avenue and is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
