Frozen pet, mystery meat or just plain creepy: What was in the pet tote on Burger King’s roof?

MASON CITY – Concerned citizens called police today to report that a pet carrier was on the top of the Mason City Burger King roof, and some were worried that a live animal was inside.

Wednesday afternoon, police were called to report that a small pet carrier was on top of the west roof of the Mason City Burger King restaurant, located at 2310 4th Street SW. A person had gone through the drive through to order a meat sandwich and saw the pet carrier on the roof. More than one person had called police, sources tell NIT.

At the scene, there was, indeed, a pet carrier on the roof. A pair of NIT readers had pulled up to the west side of the restaurant, and a Burger King employee was out back, apparently lighting up a cigarette. They asked why the pet carrier was on the roof and how it got there.

“There isn’t,” the man allegedly said, in response.

However, the NIT readers then pulled away, but were able to watch the Burger King employee reach up to the roof of the restaurant and take the carrier down. They sent pictures in to show what the man was up to.

“We yelled at him and asked him what was in the pet carrier. He thought we drove away, and then that’s when he grabbed the carrier off the roof.”

The carrier was taken down and placed in a fenced area next to a dumpster and, oddly, a small cardboard box that contained blankets. A source tells NIT that there was at least one blanket inside the pet carrier, but no animal was spotted.

No Mason City police responded to the calls made by citizens about the carrier.

NIT was told that Animal Control Officer Pat Gansen “said that [the pet carrier] could of been used as a trap for an animal on the roof” so she never responded to the call.

A source familiar with animals told NIT that “I think there was a small animal in the carrier. I think the guy was out back checking on the animal. I just hope he wasn’t cooking any human food while he was outside checking on his pet.”

Multiple calls to Burger King went unanswered.
