NEW HAMPTON – A Chickasaw county deputy is facing serious charges after he was arrested earlier this month after an alleged assault.
On October 4th, 2014, at approximately 11:15 PM, the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding an off-duty Chickasaw Deputy that was assaulting an individual. Officers with the New Hampton Police Department and Deputies with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2 East Cleveland Street in New Hampton, Iowa.
Upon arrival, and after receiving information from witnesses at the scene, 35 year old Jeffrey Allen Athey, a Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Deputy, was arrested at the scene by Officers with the New Hampton Police Department. Athey was initially charged with Assault, Causing Injury (Serious Misdemeanor) and transported to the Bremer County Jail in Waverly, Iowa. The following day, on October 5th, Athey was released on his promise to appear. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was contacted to assist with the investigation.
The subsequent investigation, conducted by the New Hampton Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), led to additional charges being filed against Athey. On October 13th, 2014, Athey was also charged with one count of Assault with the Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse (Aggravated Misdemeanor). Athey’s initial appearance on this charge is scheduled for October 23rd, 2014.
Athey has been with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office for 6 years. Athey has been on paid suspension from the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office since October 5th, 2014.
The Chickasaw County Attorney’s Office has referred this case to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for prosecution.
