CHARLES CITY -A group of citizens in Floyd county wants to expand the Board of Supervisors from three members to five.

At the August 18, 2014 Floyd County Board of Supervisors meeting, Gordon Boge, who is spearheading the Coalition for Better County Government group, provided information to the board on the formation of the coalition regarding how it is organized and incorporated.  Boge said that the coalition’s number one objective is to increase the member of the Board of Supervisors from three to five, established by districts.

As required, a petition with 1,300 signatures was not presented and Boge said that objective would be pursued.

The coalition is taking donations and intends to run a full scale campaign to increase the size of the board of supervisors. Boge mentioned that the coalition does not have a vendetta, but rather wants to make Floyd County a better county.

The supervisors and auditor encouraged coalition members to apply to serve on the numerous boards, run for township offices, get involved with the legislative process to make changes and let us know if there is any educational information we can provide to the coalition. The auditor explained the process for the coalition to submit the petition and the process to put the question on the ballot.

Merlyn Schweizer commented that people on the west side of the county feel like they don’t know what’s going on. Schweizer was informed about the numerous newspapers, radio and television stations who receive information as well as the county website and e-mail notification options available, reporting on county business.

Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch said on September 24 that “In my opinion dividing the county up to get true representation is a good idea (like other counties) As for five I wonder if we would find enough interest from the citizens to fill the ballots, because from 1992 to 2014 the B.O.S. ballots show the lack of interest from the citizens to run for public office, but maybe this committee may grow the interest. It will be interesting to watch this play out.”
