MASON CITY – During the 2013-14 academic year graduating students receiving an award from NIACC were invited to provide comments about an instructor they had in class who made a positive impact in their life and educational experience. Students voluntarily responded to a survey and were told their comments would be used to nominate a teacher for NIACC’s “Excellence in Teaching” award. A volunteer committee convened to select this year’s recipients.

Instructors were chosen from three divisions on campus: Arts and Science; Career/Technical and Adjunct Faculty.

The winning instructors are listed below followed by comments from their students.

• Arts and Science, Doug Schumacher, Chemistry — “He has made chemistry a very understandable subject for my classmates and I. I came into it thinking it would be the hardest class of my life, but Doug made this class very easy. Doug puts the terminology and work into ways that I can understand it. Chemistry is my favorite class to attend three days a week.”

• Career/ Technical: Brian Mason, Electronics Technology — “Well he teaches the material to me very well and is always there to answer my questions. He is just an all around great teacher.” “ Brian helped with classes, not just his classes but also helped with homework from other classes. He also helped with job skills and career advice.”

• Adjunct Faculty: Howard Sonksen Composition and Speech — “Howard was a great instructor. His teaching methods made it easy to learn. I took Comp and Speech 1 and Comp 2 with Howard. He made it so easy for everyone to get to know each other. By the end of the second semester I was actually sad to leave his class and the classmates I grew to know. I felt like I was leaving family because we were all open with one another…. Great instructor I learned so much.”

Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Donna Orton, presented the awards during the NIACC All-Staff meeting on August 18 and Adjunct Dinner on August 19. “These instructors deserve this recognition. We are so proud of their work and the impact they have on student success and completion,” she said.
