AMES – Right wing conservatives gathered this weekend on the campus of Iowa State University for speeches and comradeship, and left wing liberals were livid at what they heard.
At the third annual Family Leadership Summit, big-shot politicians like Governor Terry Branstad, Joni Ernst, Steve King, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Senator Ted Cruz, former Senator Rick Santorum, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee were all on hand to blast the gay lifestyle and call for a closing of the southern border while promoting Christian values.
Bob Vander Plaats runs the extreme-conservative, Christian, Family Leader, which organized the event. The Family Leader said that the goal of the summit is to “to advance pro-family, pro-conservative, and pro-freedom conservative values.”
“One of the hopeful outcomes of the Summit is to bring conservatives together early and consistently in the process leading up to the 2016 elections,” Vander Plaats said.
There was a $20.14 cost for admission.
As they event unfolded Saturday, liberals blasted the comments made by speakers at the event.
“Iowa values were nowhere to be found today at the Family Leadership Summit,” Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic said Saturday. “One speaker after another pandered to Vander Plaats, calling for our borders to be closed, our health care to be taken away, and for freedoms to be taken away from anyone whose lifestyle they disagree with.”
Sinovic said “Iowans are tolerant, accepting, and value the rights of every citizen. Unfortunately, those values were not on display by any of the speakers at today’s summit.”
Boy, you folks have sure traded in your values. No wonder this country has the problems it has. We have been so busy kicking God out of every part of our culture, it has become real easy to let those 10 Commandments go by the wayside.
Then after yet another tragedy occurs, I hear people asking, “where was God”.
Unbelievable.
“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…” Treaty of Tripoli. It was submitted to the Senate by President John Adams, receiving ratification unanimously from the U.S. Senate in 1797. Keep your religion out of the state houses. And as far as the bible backing the hate of homosexuals…well… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD52OlkKfNs …sums that up nicely. Oh just curious please tell me what Jesus has to say about…
With the growing recognition of the legitimacy of gay marriages, the extreme far right needs to move a bit closer to the center or this issue will cost them some elections. Plaats isn’t a Republican in my book but rather a space cadet wearing a helmet made of aluminum foil
So let me get this right mother, if a person feels that being gay is morally wrong, then he better start coming closer to the middle if he wants to get elected? That means if I wanted to run for office I would have to give up my morality just to be elected? That’s why I would never run because morality and spirituality means more to me than a paycheck. Takes more than money to buy me off.
@Mother Nature-I certainly agree with your comments. The type of belief and attitude that Vander Plaats has is detrimental to the Republicans winning. In my unbiased opinion and from what I have seen is Hatch is the left hand copy of VanderPlaats. I keep hoping someone in the center will run but have not seen it yet. It is always one extreme or the other.
I do not care for Vander Plaats or his ideals. He is way to far right to suit me even though I am somewhat a conservative. I firmly believe that government has no business in our personal live’s and should just but out. I would not vote for anyone who supports those veiws.
A refreshing change from you, LVS. Seriously, I’m glad to hear you won’t be voting for Branstad in November.
@JMO-I can tell you for sure I will not be voting for Hatch. He is as far left as VanderPlaats is right and is a crook on top of it. Branstad I believe will be the lessor of two evils.
I’m not trying to pick a fight, LVS, but these are your words:
“I would not vote for anyone who supports those veiws.”
Branstad DOES support those views. Please clarify. Thx.
@JMO-I believe that Branstad is just playing all of the options in a election year. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few voters in Iowa who think the same way Vander Plaats does and every vote is important. In all the years Branstad has been in office I have never seen any indicatuion that this is the way he believe’s. I could be wrong, but I hope not. The far right and the far left are going to be the ruination of this country if they don’t stop the hating. I am going to run out of…
@JMO-Cont.= I really believe that government (right or left) has no business telling us what to do in our personal lives. Where I do not agree with killing babies I also do not think anyone has the right to tell a woman what she should do with her body. And, no one can agree when a fetus becomes life so they should stay out. The same thing goes with gays. I don’t care who they live with or what they do behind closed doors. I do not like anyone hugging and kissing,it is private. Not fighting.
Then you need to figure out what you stand for. You can’t have it both ways, unless you want to be a hypocrite.
Iowa values were present.
“calling for our borders to be closed? yes they did. (only a bunch of liberal fools would not protect themselves)
“our health care to be taken away”, No the speakers did not.
“freedoms to be taken away”, No the speakers did not.
Sinovic got this one right about Conservatives, thank you!
“Sinovic said “Iowans are tolerant, accepting, and value the rights of every citizen.
If only liberals could think this way!
@ForTheRecord,…Are you for real man? You have to be single-handedly the most ignorant person I’ve ever met. Believe me when I say this. When I read your words…it makes me feel as if I’m hanging out at a Special-Ed convention. Shallow, narrow-minded and ALWAYS hiding behind God. Pathetic. Have a good day.
Sounds like the truth got your skirt in a bunch.
Well, they didn’t even kiss and hug. Oh my!
