Felon convicted of robbing man in a wheelchair violates his probation

MASON CITY – He robbed a man in a wheelchair and plead guilty to a felony, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in jail.

Wednesday morning, Cerro Gordo deputies served a warrant to 43-year-old Mason City man who violated the terms of his probation, Aaron Paul Ryerson.

Ryerson was convicted last year of felony C first degree theft for robbing a man in a wheelchair of his wallet and cell phone at the 800 block of North Federal Avenue on February 5, 2013.  Officers located Ryerson a few minutes later on North Pennsylvania Avenue in possession of the victim’s wallet. Officers were also able to locate the victim’s cell phone in the area.  The victim was treated for the assault at the scene.

Ryerson was sentenced to 10 years in prison (suspended) and a $1,000 fine (suspended) and required to pay $887.28 to Iowa courts, which he has paid none of.

Ryerson was also wanted on a warrant related to violating the terms of his probation after pleading guilty last year to felony drug possession.  He was supposed to pay Iowa courts $1,151.37 in fees but has managed to pay just $36.25.  His fines were thrown out.

Ryerson has a probation revocation hearing set for March 31, 2014.  He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $30,000 cash-only bond.
