FOREST CITY – Waldorf College will commemorate the 110th anniversary of its founding onFriday, October 11, 2013. To celebrate, President Robert Alsop has proclaimed the week leading up to Founder’s Day a time of volunteering and community service. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the college have planned numerous events to celebrate.

“It’s exciting to see the Waldorf community both here in Forest City and across the country come together to celebrate with acts of service,” Alsop said. “Waldorf College has a lot to celebrate over our 110-year history, and I look forward to our upcoming achievements as we remain rooted in our tradition of liberal arts and Lutheran heritage.”

Service projects include a used coat drive, new sock collection, state park clean up, feeding the homeless, and a book sale for the local food bank. Additional service projects and events are planned throughout the week.

Founder of Mobile Action Ministries Peter Bolstorff will speak on campus Wednesday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Atrium. Bolstorff, son of legendary former Waldorf College Football Coach David Bolstorff, will discuss the importance of service and why he created his nonprofit organization.

A special chapel service will be held on October 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Recital Hall on campus. The Waldorf Choir will sing selections from the original Founder’s Day celebration in 1903 and Waldorf College Alumni Director Rita Gilbertson will speak. This year’s homecoming theme, 110 Years Young, also celebrates the school’s milestone. Homecoming will take place from November 1-3.

Waldorf College was founded by Rev. C. S. Salveson to create a Christian college out of the unsuccessful Waldorf Hotel.  The 50-plus acre campus has grown around the original building now called Salveson Hall. Waldorf began operation as an academy and business college and transitioned to a junior college in 1920. By 1994 the school began offering bachelor’s degrees and in 2010 launched its first online programs.

A schedule of all known service projects and events is attached. Photos will be available upon request. Members of the media are welcome to attend any and all activities.
