MASON CITY – School district officials have notified the media this afternoon that homecoming activities for Friday have had to be altered due to potential inclement weather.
According to officials:
1) The 9th grade football game has been cancelled.
2) We will make a decision Friday morning by 10:00 regarding the assembly and parade. Our options are as follows:
A) Weather outlook is good for early afternoon and we will follow the current schedule for the assembly and parade.
B) Weather outlook is poor – The parade will be cancelled. We will then push the assembly back to 2:00 and run a regular school day schedule up to 2:00. Students will be dismissed for the day at the conclusion of the assembly.
3) At this time the varsity football game will be held Friday at 5:30pm. If we need to reschedule toSaturday due to threat for severe weather we will inform students, staff and parents of the gametime Friday morning by 10:00. Information will be shared through the local media (radio and television) and via email to all parents k-12.
We are also sending out an email to parents today to share this information and will communicate again Friday morning with an update.
Please understand we can only go by the best information we have with the weather forecast. Our decision will be made based on securing the safety of our students, staff and parents.
wooseyfacation is for sure. Might as well cancel or postpone it now, today, if you can still see lightning, you have to wait another 30 min.
A storm could be passed for hours, and you can still see lightning in the east. Usually near the mississippi river, but you can still see the flash.
I would guess Ottumwa does not want to drive 3 hours for no game, truth is, they dont want to drive 3 hours at all? They will drive by about 20 other 4A schools to get to here.
They could just forfeit and save them the trip. It is one way to win. Maybe the only way.
Each school has a lightning detector that is to be used at any outdoor activity. If lightning is within a certain radius, then the event has to be delayed for a set period of time. LVS, why don’t you go out and stand in the storm that is presently in MC? Hold up an antenna also. See what happens.
any of you think they might be doing this for the protection of the people that would be there? How about the saying…better to be safe than sorry? Seems to me the school officials are being proactive. What would you be posting if god forbid a young person died after being struck by lightning?
It has not started storming yet and probably won’t. It was supposed to storm all day yesterday and it lasted 15 minutes. It just the same as letting school out because the weather guessers think it might snow. If someone get struck by lightening that could happen in their own backyard.
LVS you are right, it could happen in your own back yard if you are stupid enough to let your kids go out and play in a thunderstorm. Luckily our MCHS athletic department isn’t that stupid.
Are you really that ignorant or are you just acting that way?
Seems to be storming.
OK-It is 6:00 PM and storming. Now they have a real reason to cancel. Of course channel 3 said we wouldn’t have severe storms until 9:00 PM.
That’s why the game was originally moved to 5:30, you dumb a$$ blow hard.
@DR Dunn, would that be worse than an old person dieing??
It goes hand in hand with the wooseyfacation of the America.
No rain anywhere near. 50% chance later tonight after everything is over.
Why cancel the first game? The weather outlook for today was rain all day and that didn’t happen.
