MASON CITY – A Blue Zones update was given by program manager Angie Determan Tuesday evening.
Determan is one year into on a two year leave of absence from her job at City Hall as Volunteer Coordinator. She is temporarily employed by Healthways, Inc. which along with insurance company Wellmark sponsors the Blue Zones program.
Mrs. Determan said Tuesday that she and Mayor Eric Bookmeyer continue to meet with businesses to promote the “sustainability” of the Blue Zones initiative. She also announced grants from businesses toward the program, including the Principle Group which gave $15,000.
City Hall was also designated the tenth Blue Zones work site and an award was presented to the Council.
A few weeks ago, Decorah, Iowa bowed out of the Blue Zones program, and Mason City kids were slapped with a policy banning treats from being brought to school for birthdays and celebrations as part of the Blue Zones mandate.
