
AMES – An 80-year-old Iowa woman crossing a busy street in this college town suffered serious injuries when a motorcyclist struck her in the roadway.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:01 PM on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2025 Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by Steven Javier Salazar, 31, of Ames, was traveling westbound on Lincoln Way near South Russell Avenue when it struck Margaret Suzanne Olson, 80, also of Ames, who was reportedly crossing the street.
Margaret Suzanne Olson sustained injuries in the collision and was transported by Life Flight to Mercy Hospital for treatment. Authorities noted that a seatbelt was not in use, and it did not contribute to saving a life in this pedestrian incident.
The motorcycle, owned by Steven Javier Salazar, was towed from the scene by Central Iowa Towing.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by multiple agencies in responding to the incident. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
According to an obituary, Margaret Suzanne Olson, 80, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2026 at Des Moines Mercy Hospital, and, “was a fan of the Iowa State Cyclones where she enjoyed watching the football and basketball teams. She especially enjoyed her tradition of attending Women’s basketball games with her grandson Amadeio.”
