Bengals cornerback Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones pleads not guilty to assault

CINCINNATI, June 11 (UPI) — Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones entered a not guilty plea Tuesday to a charge he hit a woman outside a Cincinnati bar.

Jones entered his plea in writing and attended a team minicamp Tuesday, WXIX-TV, Cincinnati, reported.

Jones is charged with assault in a June 5 incident outside FB’s cocktail lounge in which two allegedly intoxicated women approached the football player and asked to have a picture taken with him. When Jones declined, one woman allegedly threw a beer bottle at him.

At that point Jones allegedly hit one woman, identified by police as Shannon Wesley, 34, in the head with either a slap or a punch.

The TV station said Jones then drove off in a black Mustang.

Jones turned himself in Monday and posted a tweet saying he was arrested for acting in self-defense.

“Just got arrested for protecting myself, I will not let this break me or change what I have work so hard for,” he said in the Twitter post.

He told WXIX-TV Monday after being released from Hamilton County Jail: “I was simply defending myself. I have two beautiful little girls and a wife at home, so why would I want to hurt a female?”

Jones’ agent, Peter Schaffer, said witnesses support Jones’ version of events.

“The alleged victim was the aggressor … threw a beer bottle and hit him in the face with a beer bottle, and Adam just responded with a quick reaction to stop it, try to stop the incident,” Schaffer said.

Jones was arrested in July 2011 at a downtown Cincinnati bar and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
