Health Department Offers Better Choices, Better Health Program

(Mason City) – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is pleased to announce a free program to aid individuals with chronic health conditions.

Better Choices, Better Health is a chronic disease self-management program created by Stanford University for individuals of any age with a chronic health condition or that care for or live with someone who has a chronic condition.  Chronic conditions could include diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, chronic pain or anxiety.

This workshop gives participants the opportunity to build the necessary skills to take charge of their health by discussing topics such as nutrition, exercise, communication, medications, stress management, depression, pain, fatigue and more.

Participants meet for 2 ½ hours over 6 weeks in small groups of 10-20.  Trained peer leaders guide the group through education, support, and encouragement.  Participants learn how to manage their vast array of symptoms by interactive learning, problem solving, decision making and making weekly goals.

“Better Choices, Better Health is a great way for individuals to learn how to manage their health so they can feel better,” states Janae Halm, Better Choices, Better Health peer leader.  “It gives them the support and tools they need to live a healthy life.”

Better Choices, Better Health will start July 10 and run through August 14, 2012 from 9:00 – 11:30 AM at Mercy Cancer Center (East Campus). To participate in this free workshop, please contact Janae Halm by phone at (641) 421-9345 or by email at jhalm@cghealth.com.
