99% Spring – Iowa Summit to Confront Corporate Power

DES MOINES – Community, faith and labor organizations from all around the country have issued a joint call for a renewed movement of direction targeting the nation’s most abusive corporations, calling it the 99% Spring.

The April 14 Summit will help kick off Iowa’s 99% Spring, part of a national effort endorsed by leaders of a wide range of progressive and labor organizations including the AFL-CIO and Change to Win.  The event is intended to anchor a broad alliance of community, faith, and labor groups around a common narrative and consistent messaging that holds the corporate 1 percent accountable to the 99 percent of everyday people and hardworking families. The training agenda is designed to prepare us for joint work on progressive economic and political change in 2012.

This training is designed to be a beginning, not an end. Similar trainings taking place all over the country in April will prepare citizens for protests at corporate shareholder meetings in April and May. And successive direct actions in Iowa are planned to continue across the state throughout the spring and summer, strengthening the volunteer capacity and issue momentum of participating organizations so that we can jointly pivot more directly towards electoral work throughout late summer and fall.

Who: Community, faith and labor organizations
What: A day of education and action for progressive change. Free and open to the public.
When: Saturday April 14, 10 am – 4 pm
Location: Des Moines Central Library, 1000 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA.
