Dollar General in Lake Mills has new digs

Kelli Lageson, Albert Lea Tribune –

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — The Dollar General will celebrate a relocated store in Lake Mills at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The new place will hold a grand opening celebration where customers can receive special deals on items or win prizes. The first 50 shoppers age 18 or older will receive a $10 gift card to the store, and the first 200 will receive a Dollar General tote bag, among other giveaways.

“We wanted to expand, and this gives us an additional 2,000 square feet,” District Manager Mike Williams said.

The new location is at 906 E. Main St. in Lake Mills and will employ six to 10 people. The new store has been open since Jan. 16. The store was previously at 205 N. Mill St.

The new store will have a fresh layout that’s designed to making shopping easier for customers. Some of the store’s new features will include seasonal products and easily-recognizable departments. Williams said there are wider aisles and better selection of products.

“We extended our cooler section and went from five doors to 12 doors,” Williams said.

He said the frozen foods and deli section is expanded, and there is a large selection of cold drinks like pop, energy drinks and iced tea. While the store does not currently sell alcohol, Williams said that is a goal it’s working toward.

“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a well-edited assortment of merchandise, great prices and an updated store design,” said Gayle Aertker, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We hope our Lake Mills customers will continue to enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

Dollar General stores offer convenience and value to customers by providing a focused selection of national brands and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health and beauty care products, according to a press release.

It says Dollar General gives its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise. Dollar General is involved in the communities it serves and is a supporter of literacy and education. At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or get their General Education Development testing done can pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services.

In 1993, the company founded the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which has awarded more than $50 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 2.8 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
