Flu shots soon available in Mason City

MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health’s Immunization Clinic will begin offering flu vaccines to the public at the Health Department starting Monday, September 15, 2014.

In addition to administering flu vaccine at the Health Department, nurses from the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health will provide the following public flu clinics throughout the county this fall:

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends yearly flu vaccination begin in September, or as soon as vaccine becomes available. The immunization provides protection against the influenza strains contained in the vaccine and lasts the whole season.

“The best way to prevent becoming ill by the influenza virus is by getting vaccinated,” said Jennifer Stiles, Infectious Disease Nurse, Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health.  “We are offering several different types of vaccines for the public to choose from this year.”

The Health Department will be offering the following types of flu vaccine:

  • Traditional flu shot (3 strains)  $23
  • Traditional flu shot (4 strains)  $27
  • High-dose flu shot (ages 65 and older)  $41 (may not be available until end of September)
  • Intradermal flu shots (ages 18 – 64) $27
  • FluMist (ages 2 – 49) $27
  • Pneumonia Shot   $99

The Health Department offers various payment options.

  • Vaccine For Children Program (VFC). Vaccine is free of charge if your child meets the following requirements: child has no health insurance, child is American Indian or Alaskan Native, child is enrolled in Medcaid or child is under-insured.
  • Individuals can purchase the vaccine at full cost on the day of the clinic.
  • We also accept most major health insurances. With insurance, no money is collected at the time of the vaccination; services are billed directly to insurance. Any remaining balance is billed to the client after insurance has paid for its portion of the service. The Health Department accepts the following insurances:
    • Wellmark (Blue Cross, Blue Shield)
    • Midland’s Choice
    • Hawk-i
    • Cigna
    • Aetna
    • First Administrators
    • North Iowa Community Health Care
    • Medicare Part B

The Health Department Immunization Clinic is located in Mason City at 22 North Georgia Ave. (Mohawk Square) on the third floor.

Regular Clinic Hours: 10:00 AM – Noon & 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM, MondayFriday

Upcoming Saturday Hours for the Health Department Immunization Clinic:

  • Saturday, October 18 9:00 AM – Noon
  • Saturday, November 15 9:00 AM – Noon
