“We were spread thin at one time, but now we can offer much higher-quality inspections,” NorthIowaToday.com was told by inspectors.

Only those facilities that use complex preparation including cooking, cooling, and reheating for hot holding involves many potentially hazardous foods receive three inspections per year, which amounts to approximately 20% of our locations. The medium and low risk facilities receive two inspections per year.

Risk level is determined by the type of food served, their processes for cooking, cooling, reheating, handling of food, populations served, and other food preparation processes. Each facility is assessed to determine the appropriate level.

The department offers suggestions and even a “binder” of information that helps keep businesses in compliance and offering safe and clean food and other products.
