LATIMER — A violent collision at an uncontrolled rural intersection in Franklin County left three northern Iowa men injured Monday morning, including one who was flown to a Mason City hospital.
The crash happened at approximately 9:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Lark Avenue and 180th Street.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Nathaniel Hansen, 44, of Northwood, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Express eastbound on 180th Street.
At the same time, Kyle Gronewold, 32, of Ackley, was driving a 2014 GMC Sierra northbound on Lark Avenue.
The two vehicles reached the uncontrolled intersection, where the GMC struck the Chevrolet broadside, the patrol said.
Both vehicles careened into the northeast corner ditch before coming to rest. Each vehicle sustained enough damage to require towing.
Gronewold was injured in the wreck and flown by Mercy Air Med to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.
Tanner Sibert, 31, of Ackley, was also injured. Franklin General Ambulance transported him to MercyOne North Iowa.
Hansen suffered injuries and was taken by Franklin General Ambulance to Franklin General Hospital.
The patrol report indicates Gronewold and Sibert were not wearing seat belts. Hansen was belted, and the investigating trooper reported that the restraint saved his life.
Motor-carrier information included in the crash report identifies Speedee Delivery Service as the carrier associated with the Chevrolet Express.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Latimer Fire Department, Sheffield Fire Department, Franklin General EMS, Mercy Air Med, Franklin County Emergency Management, Franklin County REC and E&E Repair assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
