Mason City man living in Ukraine tells of life in war-torn region (PHOTOS)

"Living in Cherkasy, Ukraine, feels remarkably similar to life in Mason City, Iowa. Growing up in Mason City, where everyone knew each other, hospitality was second nature. It was common to stop on the street for a warm conversation with a neighbor, acquaintance, or even a stranger on the way to the market. Now, in a small town in the Cherkasy region, the same sense of community is evident. Though it is a city, the presence of bustling farmers' markets echoes home, where fresh, locally grown produce is always within reach."

Ukraine: Three Years of Resilience and a Personal Perspective

Three years ago, on February 24, 2022, the world watched in shock as Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many believed Ukraine would not last three days. Some Western intelligence assessments at the time predicted Kyiv would fall within 72 hours. Yet, against all odds, Ukraine has not only endured but continues to fight, proving its unbreakable spirit, strength, and unwavering commitment to democracy.

As U.S. President Joe Biden said during his visit to Kyiv in 2023, “One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also captured the nation’s defiance early in the war when he rejected evacuation offers, saying, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” These words became symbols of Ukraine’s resolve and refusal to submit to tyranny.

For three years, Ukraine has fought not only for its survival but for the principles of freedom, sovereignty, and democracy. The courage of its soldiers, the resilience of its people, and the support of allies worldwide have defied expectations time and again. The war is far from over, but one truth remains: Ukraine stands, Ukraine fights, and Ukraine will prevail.

Slava Ukraini!

A Personal Perspective: Finding Home in Ukraine

While the war has shaped Ukraine’s modern history, life in the country continues. Beyond the headlines and battlefronts, Ukraine remains a place of strong traditions, deep-rooted community, and enduring resilience. For one American, living in Ukraine has been a reminder that, despite differences in language and culture, the warmth of small-town life transcends borders.

Living in Cherkasy, Ukraine, feels remarkably similar to life in Mason City, Iowa. Growing up in Mason City, where everyone knew each other, hospitality was second nature. It was common to stop on the street for a warm conversation with a neighbor, acquaintance, or even a stranger on the way to the market. Now, in a small town in the Cherkasy region, the same sense of community is evident. Though it is a city, the presence of bustling farmers’ markets echoes home, where fresh, locally grown produce is always within reach.

In Mason City, Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical values shaped the local culture, emphasizing family, kindness, and mutual support. Similarly, in Cherkasy, Orthodox Christianity forms the cultural and moral backbone of society, but the same core values of faith, family, and looking out for one another prevail. Here, just like in small-town America, people genuinely care for each other and prioritize the well-being of their neighbors.

The language may be different, and the names may sound unfamiliar, but the warmth of the people, the sense of belonging, and the shared values make Cherkasy feel just like home. No matter the place, true community is built on kindness, connection, and the simple act of looking out for one another.

Wow look at that devastation, i sure do hope that whatever the guys name was didn’t have to forgo his daily Starbucks run.
Hopefully “president for life” Zelensky is hung in the city square like Mussolini and other dictators have been.

You are cruel and childish, like your cult leader.

Sorry, no elections in Ukraine while there is martial law. If they were to hold elections right now that would be in direct violation of the constitution which would be the act of a dictator. Write in four years how day to day life has essentially not changed one bit despite all the smoke and mirrors the orange man and his oligarch present to you.

So what you’re saying is, that Trump could declare martial law, suspend elections and you’d just be “oh okay, its fine”

I wouldn’t put it past trump to do something like that. He is already hinting at a third term. I wouldn’t be okay with that. I imagine you would find it acceptable.

Was Winston Churchill dictator when elections were suspending during WWII? I also don’t see one of the world’s largest armies directly attacking the USA like they are in Ukraine. No comparison.

I certainly hope that Ukra ine prevails despite the moron in the White House. I also hope that the same moron doesn’t make it too difficult to you to prevail. But we know he will try to appease his Russian friends.

Next thing you know, you will get put in the gulag for talk like that.

In trump’s America, that may be true within months..
