LAURENS, IOWA – One person was shot and police made an arrest after a violent gun incident in this tiny Northern Iowa town.

On November 28, 2024, at approximately 12:46 AM, the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suicidal subject at 512 N 1st Street in Laurens, Iowa. As deputies were responding, the caller advised a subject had been shot.

When officers arrived, they located a male subject suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The subject was then transported by the Pocahontas ambulance from the scene.

After further investigation, 34-year-old Eric Scott Tumilty (pictured at top) of Laurens was finally charged by the sheriff’s office on January 15, 2025, with the following crimes:

– domestic assault while displaying a weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor

– felon in possession of a firearm, a class D felony

– reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury, a class C felony

– violation of a protective order, a simple misdemeanor

Additional charges are anticipated, police say. A judge issued an arrest warrant for Tumilty and he was arrested on January 15. He was released the following day as he awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for February 5, 2025.

The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Pocahontas Police Department, and the Pocahontas Ambulance.
