Gordon Erickson, 94, of Hampton, formerly of Pipestone, MN, passed away December 25, 2024, at his home in Hampton. No local services are planned at this time. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Hampton is caring for Gordon and his family. Memorial services will be coordinated with Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone, MN, at a later date.
Gordon was born December 1, 1930, in Pipestone, to Marvin and Minnie Erickson. He attended Pipestone High School where he participated in football, boxing, track and several plays. He graduated with the class of 1948.
Gordon was united in marriage with Carol Mattin in Ozark, AL, on September 25, 1951. This marriage was blessed with 2 sons, Michael and Thomas. They made their home in Pipestone.
After high school, Gordon worked for the Minnesota National Guard, his unit was activated in January 1951 and sent to Fr. Rucker, Alabama. He left the service for a short time, returning to the MN National Guard in 1953 and served for the next 35 years, retiring as a Sargent Major. His total time in service was 42 years, 9 months.
Gordon also served as commander of American Legion Post #6, Pipestone, president of the Pipestone Country Club for six years, served on the Pipestone Fire Department from 1960 – 1985, with five years as the Fire Chief.
After retiring from the Guard, Gordon worked for John Bones Motors, driving cars and going to car auctions. He spent a lot of time on the golf course and caring for his garden and mowing lawn. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church for three years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Carol Erickson; son Thomas (significant other Pam) Erickson; grandchildren Tracy (Matt) Johnson and Gordon Erickson; great-grandchildren Kaitlynn and Wyatt, and daughter-in-law Kathy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael, and his sister Judy.
