Clear Lake Fire Department rescues distressed kayaker at Bluebill Wildlife Area

CLEAR LAKE – The Clear Lake Fire Department responded to an emergency call Saturday at Bluebill wildlife Area on Indigo Avenue, where a kayaker had fallen out of their kayak.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 7th at 11:22pm, prompting an immediate dispatch of the department’s medic unit, jon boat, and rescue truck.

Upon arrival, the firefighters utilized their aerial drone and boat crew to locate the kayaker, who had been in the water for over an hour. Despite the prolonged exposure to cooler water, the kayaker was safely brought to shore. The medic unit promptly assessed the individual, providing necessary warmth and medical attention. Fortunately, the kayaker did not require hospital transport and signed off after being checked.

The Clear Lake Fire Department was supported on the scene by the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office and the Ventura Fire Department. The kayaker, who was alone at the time of the incident, had taken several life-saving precautions. He was equipped with waterproof pants and boots and was wearing a life jacket, his cell phone was in a waterproof case, which enabled him to call for help.

Later Sunday, more details were released on the incident:

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and Clear Lake Fire Department EMS responded to the Bluebill Wildlife Area located at 14369 Indigo Avenue, Clear Lake, for a man who had capsized his kayak while out fishing. The man was identified as Sing Lai Luong of Mason City. Clear Lake Fire Department used their rescue boat to locate and bring him back to shore without incident. Luong was seen by medics at the scene and refused transport. A life jacket was utilized by Mr. Luong during the incident.
