Women’s College Basketball: Iowa State falls to Texas in overtime in Big 12 Semifinals, 82-73

KANSAS CITY – No. 8 Iowa State (26-6, 14-4 Big 12) was unable to extend its stay in Kansas City by another day as the Cyclones fell to No. 7 Texas (25-6, 13-5 Big 12) 82-73 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship.

Beatriz Jordão came up with big plays on both sides of the ball to help force an extra period, but the Cyclones were unable to make enough stops in the extra five minutes, with UT making 5-of-6 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws in the bonus period.

In defeat, Ashley Joens led ISU with another double-double, getting 33 points and 13 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Lexi Donarski, who had 11. Emily Ryan finished with eight points, five rebounds and nine assists.

The previous two meetings saw the Cyclones hit a combined 34 turnovers across the two losses. While ISU was having better luck taking care of the ball early, committing just two first-quarter turnover but only hitting two of its first nine shots. Iowa State held tough and competed in a physical first period to get it within a pair via a Lexi Donarski 3-pointer at 18-16.

Morgan Kane rolled off a screen to get a lay-in via a Nyamer Diew assist to tie it up at 18-18 on the first possession of the second quarter, with Ryan draining a 17-footer the next possession to give ISU its first lead at 20-18. Texas tied it at 20-20, but ISU stormed back in front with back-to-back 3-pointers form Ashley Joens at 26-20. The only thing that changed after a UT timeout was which Joens sister was hitting the 3-pointer, as Aubrey Joens hit a trey to make it 29-20. UT got within four in the final minute at 32-28, but it was Ryan again who stepped up, getting a lay-up with 25 seconds left and blocking Rori Harmon’s 3-pointer attempt at the buzzer to make it 34-28 ISU at the break.

Texas scored seven points in 21 seconds to cut a nine-point ISU lead to two at 37-35. Aubrey Joens hit a 3-pointer to get the ISU lead back to six at 45-39, but Texas continued to battle back and had it within two again at 45-43. Texas got back ahead on an Aliyan Mathrau 3-pointer at 49-47, but Ashley Joens drove to tie it at 49-49 the next possession. ISU got back ahead on an Ashley Joens 3-pointer, but Deyona Gaston got a lay-in in the final seconds to put the Longhorns ahead 53-52 heading to the fourth.

Donarski fired up a straightaway 3-pointer late in the shot clock to put ISU back ahead 58-56, but UT got buckets on their next three possessions, to move ahead 63-58. Ashley Joens’ 3-point play got it within two at 63-61, which was then followed by almost four minutes with neither team getting on the board. Beatriz Jordão’s block of Joanne Allen-Taylor gave ISU the ball down two with 37 seconds left. Jordão then rolled off a screen set for Ryan to lay one in and tie it at 63-63 with 22 seconds to play. UT held for the last shot of regulation, but Ebo’s lay-in attempt was long and forced extra basketball.

ISU’s first overtime game since last season’s Big 12 Championship quarterfinal against the Longhorns saw Rori Harmon and Jordão (the first of her collegiate career) trade 3-pointers, but Harmon got another and forced an ISU stop. After a Ryan turnover, UT got a second-chance bucket from Mathrau to make it 75-69 heading into the final minute. Harmon and UT held its never at the line, making all six of her free throw attempts at the stripe in the final minute to ice the contest.

Iowa State will find out its postseason fate during the 2022 NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Show Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
