CHARLES CITY – A car owned by a Charles City man on probation for child endangerment struck a train, causing thousands of dollars of damage, but police couldn’t find the driver.
The incident took place after 3 AM on December 1. Officers with the Charles City police department responded to a report of an accident at the intersection of 11th Avenue and D Street. There, they allegedly found a 2007 Chrysler 300C owned by 31-year-old Nickolas Vance of Charles City. Police say in a report that Vance’s vehicle had struck a train at the intersection and caused $8,000 worth of damage. However, the car was empty and police could not locate a driver. It appears that Vance was not charged in any way for this incident.
Records show Vance is on probation in Floyd county after pleading guilty in February to a charge of child endangerment brought by Charles City police after an incident on May 16, 2017. That same day, police went to the 500 block of Kellogg Street to investigate a report of a loud noise. They discovered a car had hit a tree in a yard – but “no one was around who claimed to be the driver” – a report states. It was not clear if Vance was involved in that incident, however.
Vance was jailed for 15 days for the child endangerment, put on probation for a year and ordered to pay $1,634.06 in fines and court fees in that case.
