WEST DES MOINES – Mason City chief of police Jeff Brinkley is a finalist for that job in West Des Moines.
The West Des Moines Civil Service Commission has certified a list of individuals for the City’s next Police Chief. The four individuals certified on the list are:
– Jeff Brinkley, Chief of Police, Mason City, Iowa
– David Ness, Captain, Des Moines Police Department
– Travis Ouverson, Captain, City of West Des Moines
– Chris Scott, Lieutenant, City of Des Moines
Chief Brinkley told NIT this week that “My name was placed on the Police Chief Civil Service hiring list by the West Des Moines Civil Service Commission this morning. The next step in the process is an interview process on October 18.”
Jeff Brinkley was selected as the new Chief of Police in Mason City in late 2015, replacing Mike Lashbrook, who retired. Chief Brinkley was sworn in to his job in January of 2016.
I get a kick out of these so called tough acting people comments on NIT, they don’t know shit. I guess I can’t blame the guy for bettering himself and leave mason city. Too many dumb asses here
Jumping ship….looked inside the beast and didn’t like what he saw. Joining Trout.
Get rid of this gutless piece of human excrement! Has to be the most narcissistic uncaring person I ever met!
Get arrested much?
Hey d!ckhead, I do not have a record at all! You must be a cop because only a cop’s arrogance would assume something like that. I don’t hate cops because I break the law I hate cops because they break the law.
I’ll bet you have seen lots of dickheads up close and personal haven’t you bigmouth? Try obeying the law and you won’t have a problem. You people make me sick. You think you can get away with anything and when you get caught you want to blame the people we pay to protect us.
3rd degree sexual abuse gets you arrested.
F+¢kt@rd! How many times do I have to tell you I have nothing Nat all on my record in fact only one speeding ticket in the last ten years. I don’t break the law, these cops in Mason City do. If the so called good cops are breaking the law by looking the other way when the bad cops do!!!
how many of you know that part of his hiring was he gets 2 days off a week to go to ames and teach at the college?? wish I had a $100,000 dollar a yr part time job like that,.
he was not chief of ames, he was a lieutenant. when is mason city gunna wake up and not go outside to get its chiefs. that’s all its been, what does the current members have to look for, they are mason city residents and are making a life long carrer, not looking for a stepping stone to go on higher, wake up mason city, thousands of more dollars wasted on the process to find a chief to stick around for 2 yrs like schlieper and then leave so we can spend thousands of more dollars looking again,
I know he believed all the negative crap Mayor Bookmeyer fed him about Matt Marquardt. He got nasty pushy with Matt at a council meeting. I think he did apologize to Matt which he should have.
Chief Brinkley was out of line the way he spoke to Matt. Police are not supposed to abuse their authority but we all know they do.
Knowing his personality as a police chief, the sooner he is gone the safer Mason City will be.
Sorry.
Chief and I are on fine terms and I believe he has done a good job here in MC; what you speak of was a misunderstanding that I believe was orchestrated by Eric Bookmeyer. The entire council except Solberg denied they were the ones who told the chief to do what he did. Eric snuck around like a virus and slandered me all over the place including to our own chief of police; it didn’t work, though, much like everything else Eric tried in his quest to destroy NIT. Good news is, NIT is stronger than ever and Eric is being put out to pasture.
Oh you think he’s a fine man? I beg to differ, anybody who refuses to stand up for something they believe in, especially when they’re in a position to actually make that belief a policy, is a piece of human excrement. That is all there is to it, bottom line.
Probably tired of the dirty Mason City politics and pressures.

I have met the chief and he is a very personable man who is easy to talk to. I know his wife had a job down south and was commuting at one time. He is from the Des Moines area I believe and probably has a lot of ties there. I did not know about the incident with Matt and am surprised to hear it. Crookmeyer probably poisoned his attitude towards him.
Sound reasonable, I think he is from that area, I know he was ames police chief before mason city I can’t blame him for wanting to go back there.
