MARSHALL COUNTY — Two Iowans were killed in a tragic motorcycle crash after the rider attempted to pass another vehicle in a clearly marked no-passing zone, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 9:23 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, near 1317 295th Street in Marshall County.
Authorities said a 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by 31-year-old Brandon Overman of Rhodes was traveling east on 295th Street when Overman attempted to pass another vehicle in a marked no-passing zone.
As the motorcycle entered a curve, Overman failed to negotiate the turn and lost control, according to the State Patrol. The motorcycle slid off the roadway into a ditch and vaulted, ejecting both people aboard.
Overman suffered fatal injuries and was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
His passenger, 27-year-old Chandler Kendall of Rhodes, also suffered fatal injuries. Kendall was transported by Mercy LifeFlight to Mercy Hospital following the crash.
Both occupants ultimately died from injuries suffered in the wreck.
The Iowa State Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. Trooper Scott Bogdanski investigated the accident with assistance from multiple agencies.
The crash is another deadly reminder of the extreme danger involved in attempting to pass where roadway markings prohibit it, particularly on rural roads where hills and curves can severely limit a driver’s ability to see approaching traffic or safely return to the proper lane.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s latest preliminary count, 158 people had been killed on Iowa roadways in 2026 as of July 20. Fatality totals can change as crash investigations are completed and deaths occurring within 30 days of a crash are added to the official count.
