Hundreds lose gas service in Mason City after line disrupted

Near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 5th.
MASON CITY – A contractor breached an Alliant Energy gas line in Mason City Monday night, causing a service interruption to hundreds of customers.

Alliant Energy tells NIT that their crews worked to repair a gas leak along Highway 122 in Mason City late Monday evening before 11 PM. They said the area was safe and repair work would take all night. They say the breach occurred near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 5th Street SW.

Around 6 AM, the gas leak was repaired. “We need to turn off gas to 50-60 more homes this morning and then re-pressurize,” Alliant said, “then we will need to go house by house and turn everyone back on and then get in re-light pilot lights.”

Alliant said a contractor doing work in the area unrelated to Alliant Energy caused the gas line breach by hitting the line. Over 300 customers lost gas service.
