MASON CITY – Any active person has to be over-joyed at the sight of the new trails under construction in Mason City.

Perhaps the most-noticeable project in town right now are the much-needed bicycle and pedestrian trails under construction all over the city. This is a real amenity that can be used to lure younger, active people to town – or to keep people from leaving. Many say these new trails will do a lot to make a better quality of life in Mason City.

You can see the trail construction in several key locations: South Monroe Avenue, where Larry Elwood construction is installing concrete trail from about 8th Street south to 15th Street. Elsewhere, 9th Street SW near Menards and north along Taft Avenue has new trails going in.

Today, Heartland Asphalt was busy with skid loaders and tractors, plowing up the boulevard along North Illinois Avenue, prepping to install an asphalt trail along that route. It will link up with the NIACC trail, which is a great route all the way to the NIACC campus.

If all goes well, most every trail construction project started this summer will be completed in the next several weeks.

When this first came out, I made the comment that the road by the river in East Park was a disgrace with all of the holes in it, when this park is used by so many each day. Today when traveling on N. Carolina, I was happy to see that it has now been black topped!!! I do not know which company did this or if it was done as a free upgrade to the city, but I commend the work that was done. It looks WONDERFUL and will be enjoyed by so many. THANK YOU!

Yes that road @ east park needs repair, scrip road needs redone, It’s too bad heartland wouldnt donate some labor/material to do the east park road. What a great way of saying we support MC. Someone should try and get business to pitch in. Maybe take a year or two off fromm the buying of the statues and use that for some blacktop??????????????????????

I like all the trails! For the elite? Really? If you can afford to ride or own a bike, you are elite? I always wanted to be elite. I guess I am

Will these trails lead to mexico or maybe deadtroit ???

Beats the porky plant giveaway — GO TRUMP !!

More special interest spending for the elites.

I think this project is a good one. Bicycles, and walkers, it’s a nice safe path. Monroe is a busy road, and not safe for those on bikes. It will be a nice amenity.

Sure funny how all of this money can be spent on something like this, but not on the road along the river into East Park! It is a disgrace, especially for a park that is used so much each day!!!!!

I do agree they deafly need to fix that Road in East Park. You about lose your suspension every time you try to drive on it!
With that being said, in my opinion, the bike/walking trails are a great investment for our city

Waste of time and taxpayer money. Those fund should go to road repair only.

This is a great spend of my tax dollars. My family and I bike almost every day and these new trails are definitely needed. I know a lot of people who will benefit from these trails. It’s About time the city uses our tax dollars for a good cause.

Me too! Can’t wait!

Why don’t the finish what the started. The path along Monroe hasn’t been touched for over a month
