Teen arrested after going to Iowa City, robbing people and firing gun

gunIOWA CITY – The Iowa City Police Department arrested a 16-year-old minor following an incident of shots fired.

On Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m., police responded to the area of Esther Court and Parkview Avenue for a report of shots fired.

Multiple witnesses on scene provided the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center with a suspect, vehicle, and license plate description. At 7:06 p.m, the vehicle was located near the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office traveling southbound on First Avenue approaching Highway 6. The police department, along with the sheriff’s office, performed a high risk traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 6 and Broadway Street. Five juveniles were located inside of the vehicle including the suspect and a pistol.

Over the course of the investigation, it was determined that Dannish D. Robertson, 16, of 703 26 Street SE, Cedar Rapids, had come to the Iowa City area from Cedar Rapids with the purpose of engaging in a fight with the three victims.

When Robertson confronted the victims he reportedly showed a handgun and demanded that the victims empty their pockets and claimed he would shoot them. Robertson reportedly fled back to his vehicle where he pointed the firearm in the direction of the victims and began firing shots as they ran.

No injuries were reported. However, at least one round hit the residence of a victim. Robertson later informed investigators that he went to the victim’s residence with the intent to intimidate them and only began to fire shots after a verbal exchange.

Robertson is facing charges of three counts of Robbery in the First Degree and three counts of Attempted Murder, both are Class B Felonies. Robertson was later transported to the Linn County juvenile detention center.

The immediate information and descriptions provided by witnesses were instrumental in the timely location and subsequent capture of the suspect. With this significant community involvement and partnership, law enforcement was able to stabilize the incident in a quick and efficient manner. Additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the final investigation.

The Iowa City Police Department was assisted in this incident by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center. Additionally, the Cedar Rapids Police Department has been contacted and provided information regarding this investigation.
