Caught three years ago driving drunk, Mason City woman finally sent to jail

MASON CITY – A Mason City woman who was caught drunk driving after ordering grub from a fast food joint was finally sent to jail, over three years after the crime.

Haley Marie Smith, now age 22, was caught drunk driving back on February 17, 2013. Shortly after 5 AM that morning, a quick thinking McDonalds’ worker called Mason City police to report a possible drunk driver that had just ordered food at the restaurant at 1651 4th Street SW. Eight minutes after the call was received, a Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 18 and Killdeer Avenue and initiated a traffic stop. The deputy arrested the driver of the vehicle identified as Haley Marie Smith of Mason City after she failed field sobriety testing and he spotted an open container of alcohol in her vehicle.

Three years of jousting in court finally finally led to a guilty plea from Smith on the drunk driving charge. She was sent to jail for two days and ordered to pay $1,093.75 in fines and fees (half her fine was suspended).

Smith earlier pleaded guilty to the open container charge and had to pay $511.50 in fines and fees.
