Police warn of car prowlers in Mason City

MASON CITY – Mason City has been experiencing a rash of thefts from vehicles in the past few weeks, Mason City police said.

During June and July a total of 17 thefts from vehicles were reported. Since the beginning of August, we have received almost 30 reports. The majority of the thefts have occurred from vehicles that have been left unlocked during the overnight hours. This type of theft can be one of the easiest crimes to prevent with increased awareness and a change in habits. Here are some tips to consider that will reduce the chances your vehicle will be targeted:

– Anytime you leave your vehicle close the windows, lock the doors, and take your keys with you.
– If you can, park your vehicle in a closed and locked garage.
– If you have to park on the street, park in a well-lighted portion of the street if possible.
– If you park in your driveway, leave exterior house lights on near the vehicle or consider
installing a motion light.
– Remove valuables, including loose change, or other items from view. Even an item such
as a gym bag may be tempting to an offender who may assume it contains valuables such
as electronics.
– Remove garage door openers, key cards, and house or work keys from the car.
– Don’t leave credit cards, identification, or personal information in the glove compartment
or other storage areas.
– When you place valuables in the trunk, try to do so in a way that doesn’t attract attention.
– Talk with your neighbors about things happening in your neighborhood. Call the police if you are noticing unusual activity especially during the overnight hours. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

It is impossible to remove all risk of being a victim of criminal activity, but if you follow
