MASON CITY – The Humane Society of North Iowa recently broke ground on a new addition to their animal shelter in Mason City. The 1200 square foot addition will be used to house displaced, abandoned and homeless cats.

In 2009, the Humane Society of North Iowa constructed a 6600 square foot shelter facility using funds raised in a Capital Campaign. The current main cat area consists of two large rooms that house 28 cat kennels. The new addition will have the capacity to house up to 40 cat kennels. “We are excited about this project,” stated Sybil Soukup, Executive Director of the Humane Society, “as it will provide a much more enriching space for our feline friends who temporarily reside with us while waiting to be adopted. The addition will feature 5 smaller rooms that will house 8 cats each. This will give each cat more time to be outside of their kennel to play and socialize,” concluded Soukup.

The current cat kennel areas will be converted into two “Meet and Greet” rooms where volunteers and potential adopters can take an animal to spend more one on one time with them. “We currently only have one indoor space for people to take animals into to interact with them. If one person is using that room, it is unavailable to others,” explained Soukup.

“According to our records, we had almost 3500 visitors to our shelter last year,” stated Sybil Soukup, Executive Director of the Humane Society. “When we built our shelter 6 years ago, we used all the available funds to construct a safe, clean and welcoming environment for the animals. We are excited to be able to now create some space for our human visitors to enjoy with the shelter animals, “concluded Soukup.

This project is being completely funded through the generous estate of Ruth DuPuis and is being constructed by Dean Snyder Construction of Clear Lake. It is expected to be completed this winter.

The Humane Society of North Iowa is a non-profit organization that serves a 9 county area in North Iowa and operates a no-kill rescue animal shelter in Mason City. Since being founded in 1959, the Humane Society of North Iowa has found loving homes for over 10,000 abandoned, displaced, and neglected animals.
